1) How might this video contribute to Butler’s idea that gender roles are a ‘performance’?
This video might contribute to Butler's idea that gender roles are a 'performance' as beyonce is dressed up in traditional house wife clothing and seems upset/ empowering through out the video so this may be a performance by beyonce.
2) Would McRobbie view Beyonce as an empowering role model for women?
McRobbie would view Beyonce as an empowering role model for women as there were elements within the video which showed the audience that she is powerful. For example there was a scene where Beyonce was cleaning her grammys which shows that she is powerful and more than just a housewife. Also the contrasting look from beyonce shows audiences the women have progressed a lot from house wife to working class women.
3) What are your OWN views on this debate – does Beyonce empower women or reinforce the traditional ‘male gaze’ (Mulvey)?
I believe that Beyonce empowers women as there are elements within the video which could show beyonce to be empowering. However the male gaze can be argued as well as beyonce looked wore stocking and showing her legs a lot.
