Daily Mail website's ad revenues surge as paper announces price hike

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/28/daily-mail-websites-ad-revenues-surge-as-paper-prepares-for-price-hike

Mail Online’s ad revenues increased by 27% in the fourth quarter

- Owner of Daily Mail said that MilOnline revenue boosted its ad revenue by 27%
- This boost happened in the final quarter
- website saw digital ad revenues grow by 17% in UK and 66% in the US in the three months to the end of december
- Advertising across the Mail business as a whole, including print and digital, was down by 3%.

The article shows that MailOnline is surviving as a business because of New/Digital media however the impact does not impact the business overall as they are still facing a loss of 3% in which is because of newspapers declining.

BuzzFeed faces $11m defamation lawsuit from viral news agency

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/27/buzzfeed-lawsuit-central-european-news-michael-leidig

BuzzFeed has been hit with an $11m lawsuit by Central European News and its founder Michael Leidig

- Buzzfeed is being sued for $11 million (7.7 million) by its news agency and its founder because of an article posted by buzzfeed which was called "The King of Bullshit News"
- Central European News which was founded and run by British journalist Michael Leidig has launched a US legal action against buzzfeed over an article which is claimed to defame the neews agency
- They are seeking $5m each, as well as a further $1.04m for lost business opportunities, and further punitive damages

In my opinion companies such as buzzfeed are allowed to publish they would like however news companies limit themselves because there are firms out their who are looking to sue news organisations. Also I do not believe the news agency will win the law suit resulting in a loss as they need to pay lawyers and other people.

Exotic - In tight jeans , the theee black characters are presented as exotic as they were wearing colourful clothing.
Dangerous - In this short film, normally black people would be represented as dangerous however they have not represtned in this way, one representation may be of mob mentality in which the white people walked straight past
Humorous - Also these black characters have been seen as humorous as they reactions, conversation is seen as funny for anyone who watches this

Learner Response

- I would need to reference authors more in my essay
- Also more articles should be listed to relate articles with democracy and social media
- More quotes were needed to support my views on democracy and new/digital media.
- More on the news and the institution
- More on citizen journalism - e.g Eric Garner
- I need to cover institution more
-  Present both sides of the democracy -
E.g 1/3 of world population do not have internet access which means , people do not have much access.

EBI - Lacks specific reference of the news case study
More needed on Murdoch/ News corporate + gatekeeper/ News values

The Sun's Jeremy Corbyn apology provokes further outrage with 'tiny' front page mention

Sun-Corbyn-apology.jpg

The Sun had been ordered to print its apology to Jeremy Corbyn on its front page but some readers were struggling to find it when it was published. The Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso) found the newspaper had been “significantly misleading” in a September story that wrongly alleged the Labour leader joined the Privy Council to gain millions of pounds for his party. After months of wrangling over an accuracy complaint, The Sun agreed to put a correction on its cover, but buried it with four lines at the bottom left corner of the page.

  • The headline, directing readers to page two, read “Ipso complaint on Labour short money upheld”, making no reference to Mr Corbyn or the fact it was the subject of the complaint.
  • The Sun said that the article “could have been clearer, but was based on accurate information”

The sun was misleading before and yet still failed to openly rectify their mistake, instead they just put it in small font as an unimportant message which i believe was wrong.

Facebook accused of deliberately breaking some of its Android apps

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jan/05/facebook-deliberately-breaking-android-apps

Facebook Home runs on an Android phone. The app was a previous attempt by Facebook to capitalise on its Android userbase.

- Facebook accused of crashing its android app selectively for long periods of time
- This is to experiment how long users would wait until the go away into trying to get into the android  Facebook app
- The lure of Facebook proved too strong, the threshold was not reached
- If app was not working for hours , people resulted in using the website version
- In 2014 facebook received backlash for telling the public they were experimenting with users
- Those tests were psychological tests which was done by testing how people react to positive and negative test

We need to understand that Facebook is a business in which Facebook gather information regarding to their benefit in making the business grow further. Also companies may pay Facebook to release some results from testing to them which will be used for marketing purposes.

Identities & the media: Reading the riots

  1. How did the language and selection of images in the coverage create a particular representation of young people?
The word 'riot' was used on all newspapers rather than 'unrest' / 'protest' / 'protests' / 'civil disturbances'

Participants were repeatedly described as 'young people' - these were the feral youth / the 'hoodies' and 'yobs'

This was reinforces with the images on the front page which had participants in hoodies

Also the participants were seen as the devil as fire was used a lot to represent this

Many of the participants convicted of crimes during the crimes were by no means young

  1. Why does David Buckingham mention Owen Jones and his work Chavs: the demonisation of the working class?
Owen Jones argues the working class has become an object of fear and ridicule, many of the participants in the riots had respectable middle class jobs or from wealthy backgrounds which lead Owen Jones to argue this.

  1. What is the typical representation of young people – and teenage boys in particular? What did the 2005 IPSOS/MORI survey find?
40% of newspaper articles featuring young people focussed on violence, crime or anti social behaviour
Also 71% can be described as having a negative tone
young people accounted for 1% of sources for interviews and opinions across sample

Women in journalism analysed 7000+ stories which found 72% to be negative. This was 20 times more than positive stories (3.4%).
Over 75% of stories were regarding crime, drugs or police. The great majority were negative (81%).
  1. How can Stanley Cohen’s work on Moral Panic be linked to the coverage of the riots?
Cohen argues that the media talked up the disturbances and made it into a bigger moral panic than it already is.
Cohen also argued that the media plays a role in deviance amplification in reporting the phenomenon, and in expresing the fear outrage of 'respectable society'
  1. What elements of the media and popular culture were blamed for the riots?
The elements for media pop culture that blamed the riots were rap music, violent computer games, or reality TV
  1. How was social media blamed for the riots? What was interesting about the discussion of social media when compared to the Arab Spring in 2011?
The Sun reported that ' THUGS used social network Twitter to orchestrate the Tottenham violence and incite others to join in as they sent messages urging: 'Roll up and loot'.

A similar argument was used in the debates about the 'Arab Spring'
there was discussion about the use of social network in revolutions that took place in countries such as Tunisia, Egypt and Syria. This was interpreted by the western media as being a positive thing.
  1. The riots generated a huge amount of comment and opinion - both in mainstream and social media. How can the two-step flow theory be linked to the coverage of the riots?
The two step flow diagram can be linked as opinion leaders (politicians/celebrities) get information from newspapers in which is passed down to the public.
  1. What were the right-wing responses to the causes of the riots?
The right wing responses to the causes for the riots were listed as follows: uneducated, unparented, welfare dependent, brutalised youngsters
  1. What were the left-wing responses to the causes of the riots?
The right wing responses to the causes for the riots were listed as follows: inequality, poverty, cuts in youth services, rising youth unemployment and removal of Education maintenance.
  1. What are your OWN views on the main causes of the riots?
The use of technologies was the main causes for the riots in my opinion as thats where social media users created the buzz about the riots. Also the killing of Mark Dugan was the main reason as the killing was seen as unjustified.
  1. How can capitalism be blamed for the riots? What media theory (from our new/digital media unit) can this be linked to?
The politicians who lie and cheat who leave then sad young men and woman without hope or aspiration
  1. Were people involved in the riots given a voice in the media to explain their participation?
Only explanations to the riots were seen on YouTube hoever no interview of participants were seen on TV which raises questions as what the media wanted to portray.

  1. In the Guardian website's investigation into the causes of the riots, they did interview rioters themselves. Read this Guardian article from their Reading the Riots academic research project - what causes are outlined by those involved in the disturbances?
One reason pointed out in the article was opportunism. Another reason was the use of social media which sparked more hype for the riots. One more reason was the injustice that happened with Mark Duggan.
  1. What is your own opinion on the riots? Do you have sympathy with those involved or do you believe strong prison sentences are the right approach to prevent such events happening in future?
I do have sympathy for the participants of the riots as there main reason was to support Mark Dugan and gain some justice however not as much sympathy as most of the participants were middle class people in respectable jobs.
