new/digital media stories

1) The Spectator records highest ever total circulation
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/11/the-spectator-magazine-records-highest-ever-circulation
David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Fraser Nelson at the the Spectator summer party in 2010.

- The Spectator has recorded its highest ever total circulation figures after racking up 71,707 print and digital sales for the last 6 months of 2015
- The New statesman saw biggest rise in both print, increasing copy sales 9% to 31,465 and digital which has tripled to more than 1900
- Pirate Eye which is available in print remain way ahead of the UK focused competition, selling 229,777 copies, an increase of 4.7% on same period of 2014
- Economist saw small declines in its UK print sales, down just over 7% to 16

In my opinion, it is expected that a magazine publishing organisation will do well with the development of new/digital media. However I'm surprised to find out that Pirate Eye who are a print only news organisation did better than The Spectator.

2) Cosmopolitan magazine overtakes Glamour in battle of glossies
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/11/cosmopolitan-magazine-overtakes-glamour-in-battle-of-glossies

Cosmopolitan magazine

- cosmopolitan magazine has increased its circulation to more than 400,000 to overtake rival glamour
- slashing its cover price to £1 and upping the number of copies it gives away to nearly 100,000
- The magazine which is owned by Hearst UK relaunched in October, cutting its price from £3.80
- price drop helped the magazine organisation sell more copies in the UK from 76000 to more than 215,000
- total circulation was up by 57% which may have been because of targeting a wider
- Apparently are also gaining 4.8 million unique users every month and through snapchat discover

In my opinion Cosmopolitan have done well because of the social media advertising on snapchat. As a result the snapchat discover has helped people who would have never heard of Cosmopolitan to find out about them, this then will mean more people would be interested in buying the magazine issues.

Collective Identity

1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?'

Who are you?
The section talks about that who want to seem to be, who we are, who we want to be seen as is influenced by the construction of role models, representation of cultural values and they way media informs us about lifestyle/ fashion choices.

I think, therefore I am
In the past, peoples identity was constructed based on the predetermined roles within society, such as class, religion, gender.

From citizen to customer
In the 20th century, companies targeted their brands to consumers to fulfil their desires in which made citizens into consumers, also certain brands in society were needed to meed social expectations.

The rise of individual
In the past, people wanted to be different from others in which advertisers targeted consumers to show that people can represent themselves with their products, such as a car can tell something about a consumer.

Branding and personality
People buy products to represent their personality rather than the importance of wanting the product, culture is now about factors such as physical beauty rather than religion/class.

Who will we be
Social media sites help for people to construct their own identity as they are allowed to upload the images they would like and have the control of what multimedia is shared onto the social networking site.

2) List five brands you are happy to be associated with and explain how they reflect your sense of identity.

Nike - I'm happy to be associated with Nike as I believe their clothing reflects the clothing I am likely to wear
Apple - I'm happy to be associated with Apple as I like the products they have designed as they have a good designs as wells as functionalities
Instagram - I'm happe to be associated with Instagram as this is the social networking app I like to use the most
Arsenal - I'm happy to be associated with Arsenal as I am a supporter of the football club for severals of years.
3) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about 'style over substance'? What does this expression mean?

I agree that modern media is all about 'style over substance' as people are more concerned with the clothes they wear, the price of the products they acquire rather than buying a product that works good. This then means that style is much more important for consumers rather than substance.

4) Explain Baudrillard's theory of 'media saturation' in one paragraph. You may need to research it online to find out more.

5) Is your presence on social media an accurate reflection of who you are? Have you ever added or removed a picture from a social media site purely because of what it says about the type of person you are?

I believe presence on social media is an accurate reflection of who I am, on my instagram account I have never removed a picture since it has been created which was in 2014. This is because I generally do not care how people see my pictures and if the older pictures do not appeal as much.

6) What is your opinion on 'data mining'? Are you happy for companies to sell you products based on your social media presence and online search terms? Is this an invasion of privacy?

I am not in favour of data mining as companies should not be able to find out habits of users of social media just to target their products. However I think that this a great marketing method of

New/Digital stories

1) Twitter US users fall by a third in two years

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jan/29/twitters-us-users-fall-by-third-two-years-report
A 3D-printed Twitter logo

- Twitters american userbase has fall by a third according to figures from third-party analytics from 7park data
- figures contradict Twitters own numbers, which report a 25% growth over the same period
- 7park says that Twitters second social network Vine has suffered falls as well
- Vine declining to less than three fifths of its April 2014 install base
-  In that month, Twitter was installed on 36.1% of US mobile devices according to 7 Park while Vine was installed
The situation is just as bad when worldwide users are taken into account, with Twitter’s penetration falling from 30% to just over 22%.

In my opinion I believe that the decrease in Twitter's users is expected as other social networks such as Instagram have gained much more popularity as Instagram is much more exciting and interesting to users of social media. Also I feel that Twitter were not able to maximise on their users when they were at an all time high.

2)  Daily Mail website's ad revenues surge as paper announces price hike
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/jan/28/daily-mail-websites-ad-revenues-surge-as-paper-prepares-for-price-hike
Mail Online’s ad revenues increased by 27% in the fourth quarter

- Owner of Daily Mail has said growth has said that MailOnline has  boosted its ad revenue
Daily Mail & General Trust reported on Thursday that Mail Online, which missed its £80m annual revenue target last year, had a growth rate of 16% in the year to the end of September.
Mail Online’s 27% boost in the final quarter is a promising sign, particularly given at one point last year its growth rate fell to single digits as the entire digital newspaper ad market faltered.
The website saw digital ad revenues grow by 17% in the UK and 66% in the US in the three months to the end of December

In my opinion MailOnline has a much more than a UK audience and has a massive viewing from the USA in which is a massive population. This enabled the MailOnline to grow website traffic resulting in much more revenue or money made from the Mail. Also the decline in newspapers is not being matched with MailOnline revenue so the growth helps to reduce losses they are already facing.

Ched Evans - Petition to prevent convicted rapist playing

Article link - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11324994/Ched-Evans-Who-is-Jean-Hatchet-leading-petitions-against-his-return-to-football.html

1) Summarise this example for the rest of the class in one paragraph

In this article, Jean Hatched who is the person behind a petition of getting Ched Evans a convicted rapist to be stopped from returning to professional football. The petition from Jean Hatched have received more than 160,000 signatures. Also another petition was created by Jean Hatchet from stopping Ched Evans to be signed by Oldham Athletic and received 21000 sugnatures.

2) What was the initial incident or situation that sparked this example?

The initial incident was that Ched Evans was a convicted rapist in which as Jean Hatched took to online to make sure and ruin the chances for a convicted rapist to play for professional football again
3) In your opinion, is this an example of a valid campaign or something of a witchhunt against people who are not doing any serious harm?

In my opinion I believe this example is of a valid campaign in which Jean Hatched is making an impact as big news organisations such as The Telegraph are reporting this. However a big enough impact has not been created as the football representatives for Oldham Athletic have not reporting anything in favour of Jean Hatchet.

Feminism - Beyonce

1) How might this video contribute to Butler’s idea that gender roles are a ‘performance’?

This video might contribute to Butler's idea that gender roles are a 'performance' as beyonce is dressed up in traditional house wife clothing and seems upset/ empowering through out the video so this may be a performance by beyonce.

2) Would McRobbie view Beyonce as an empowering role model for women?

McRobbie would view Beyonce as an empowering role model for women as there were elements within the video which showed the audience that she is powerful. For example there was a scene where Beyonce was cleaning her grammys which shows that she is powerful and more than just a housewife. Also the contrasting look from beyonce shows audiences the women have progressed a lot from house wife to working class women.

3) What are your OWN views on this debate – does Beyonce empower women or reinforce the traditional ‘male gaze’ (Mulvey)?

I believe that Beyonce empowers women as there are elements within the video which could show beyonce to be empowering. However the male gaze can be argued as well as beyonce looked wore stocking and showing her legs a lot.

Post Colonialism - Edward Said ORIENTALISM

Summarise the three theorists we have looked at: Alvarado, Fanon and Said.

Fanon said that ethnic minorities contained elements listed below within media represented the media in the UK

Fanon also said that black people are seen as acting white in which he stated 'putting on the white mask'

Alvarado
PITIED
HUMOUROUS
EXOTIC
DANGEROUS

Fanon
Primitivize -
Essentialize -
Decivilized -
Institutionalized  -

Edward Said - Orientalism
This theorist said that the western stereotyped the east as inferior and the west is seen as superior

2) The Yasmin clip showed or portrayed British muslims to be less superior to the white British characters in the clip. This is because the white characters were seen as more confident than the British muslim character Yasmin. However one positive stereotype of British muslims is that they are seen as religious which portrays a good stereotype. One more negative stereotype is that the muslim main character had to change into western clothing to hang out with the white main characters which again shows the British muslims to be less powerful

3)   Alvarado

Dangerous -

Humorous -

Exotic -

Fanon
Decivilized -

Primitivize -
